Emotional Regulation Therapy

Big feelings are part of being a kid. But when meltdowns rule the day and small changes feel like catastrophes, your whole family carries it. At Brighten Pediatric Therapy in Hobbs, NM, we give children tools for their feelings, and give you tools too.

Why Regulation Is an OT Skill

Emotional regulation is the ability to notice a feeling, ride it out, and come back to calm. It depends on a body that feels safe and a nervous system that isn't already overloaded. That's why it sits squarely in occupational therapy: we work on the body and the sensory system first, and the coping skills land on solid ground.

A child who melts down isn't choosing to. They've run out of tools. We help them build more.

You might notice your child:

  • Goes from fine to furious in seconds, with little warning
  • Has meltdowns that last a long time and are hard to recover from
  • Struggles with transitions: leaving the park, turning off screens, bedtime
  • Gives up or explodes when something is hard or doesn't go their way
  • Seems anxious, clingy, or shuts down in new places
  • Hits, throws, or says hurtful things when overwhelmed, then feels terrible
  • Falls apart after holding it together all day at school
  • Has trouble naming what they feel or asking for help

What Emotional Regulation Therapy Addresses

We help children understand their own engine, notice when it's revving too high or too low, and know what to do about it.

Recognizing Big Feelings

Putting words and body signals to emotions, so your child can catch a feeling early instead of being ambushed by it.

Coping Strategies

A personal toolkit of breathing, movement, and calming activities your child picks and practices until they're automatic.

Sensory Tools for Calm

Heavy work, deep pressure, movement breaks, and quiet corners that bring an overloaded nervous system back to baseline.

Transitions Without Meltdowns

Warnings, visual timers, first-then routines, and rituals that make endings and beginnings predictable.

Frustration Tolerance

Graded challenges in play that stretch your child's ability to stick with hard things and recover from mistakes.

Family Strategies

What to say, what to skip, and how to set up your home so regulation is easier for everyone, including you.

Our Approach

You can't teach a child to calm down while they're melting down. So we teach the skills when your child is regulated and having fun, through play-based, sensory-focused activities, and rehearse them until they're ready when the hard moment comes.

We use the same simple language across home, clinic, and school, so your child hears one message everywhere.

And we coach you in every session, because your calm is the most powerful regulation tool your child has.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as counseling or play therapy?

No, and they pair well. Counselors work on thoughts and feelings through talk and play. Occupational therapists work on the body and sensory system underneath those feelings, and on the practical skills of daily life. Many families use both.

Do I need a referral from our pediatrician?

Many insurance plans require a physician referral and authorization. We'll help guide you through that process. Just give us a call.

My child is fine at school but falls apart at home. Is that normal?

Very. Holding it together all day takes enormous effort, and home is where your child feels safe enough to let go. We'll help you build an after-school routine that gives that energy somewhere better to go.

How long will my child need OT?

Treatment plans are typically 6-12 months with weekly sessions, though this varies by child. We set specific, measurable goals and review progress regularly so you always know where things stand.

Do you work with the whole family?

Yes. Parent coaching is part of every session, and we're glad to include siblings, grandparents, or anyone else who is part of your child's daily life.
