Developmental Delay Therapy
Every child develops on their own timeline. But when milestones keep slipping past, waiting is the hardest choice. At Brighten Pediatric Therapy in Hobbs, NM, we help children catch up and keep going.
When to Ask About a Delay
A developmental delay means a child is behind in one or more areas: movement, hand skills, self-care, play, or how they take in and respond to the world. Sometimes there's a known cause. Often there isn't, and that's okay. What matters is starting.
Pediatricians, daycare teachers, and parents are usually the first to notice. If your gut says something is off, you don't have to wait for someone else to agree.
You might notice your child:
- Sat, crawled, or walked noticeably later than other children
- Has trouble holding a bottle, cup, spoon, or crayon
- Seems floppy or unusually stiff, or tires quickly
- Isn't dressing, feeding, or toileting at the level of peers
- Doesn't stack, sort, pretend, or play with toys the way other kids do
- Struggles with chewing, swallowing, or trying new foods
- Has a hard time with stairs, climbing, or playground equipment
- Was born early or spent time in the NICU
What Developmental Therapy Addresses
We start with a full evaluation, then work on the skills that unlock the next ones, because development builds on itself.
Milestone Evaluations
Standardized developmental testing plus careful observation, so you know exactly where your child stands and what to work on first.
Gross & Fine Motor
Core strength, balance, coordination, and the hand skills needed to grasp, release, stack, draw, and eventually write.
Self-Care Skills
Dressing, feeding, grooming, and toileting, taught step by step and practiced until they stick.
Play & Learning Readiness
Attention, imitation, problem solving, and pretend play: the foundations every classroom skill is built on.
Feeding & Oral Motor
Chewing, swallowing, cup and utensil skills, and expanding the foods your child will accept.
Home Programs
Simple activities woven into your day, so the hours between sessions count as much as the sessions themselves.

Our Approach
Early intervention works because young brains are built to learn. We use play-based, sensory-focused activities that turn hard skills into games your child wants to play again.
We track progress against clear milestones and share it with you in plain language, so you always know what's improving and what we're working on next.
And we coach you in every session, because a few minutes of the right practice every day does more than any single hour in our clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions
My pediatrician says to wait and see. Should I?
You can do both. An evaluation doesn't commit you to therapy, and it gives you real information instead of worry. If your child is on track, we'll tell you. If not, you've saved months.
Do I need a referral from our pediatrician?
Many insurance plans require a physician referral and authorization. We'll help guide you through that process. Just give us a call.
How is this different from state early intervention?
New Mexico's early intervention program serves children under three, often at home. We see children from infancy through 18 in a clinic built for pediatric OT, and many families use both.
How long will my child need OT?
Treatment plans are typically 6-12 months with weekly sessions, though this varies by child. We set specific, measurable goals and review progress regularly so you always know where things stand.
Will my child catch up completely?
Many children do. Others make steady progress on their own timeline. We won't promise a specific outcome, but we will set clear goals, measure them honestly, and adjust the plan when the numbers say so.
