Occupational Therapy for Autism
Autistic children experience the world in their own way. At Brighten Pediatric Therapy in Hobbs, NM, we don't try to change who your child is. We help them do the things they want and need to do, with less stress for everyone.
How Autism Can Show Up in Daily Life
Every autistic child is different. Some are overwhelmed by noise, textures, and busy rooms. Others seek out spinning, jumping, and pressure all day long. Many find dressing, eating, sleeping, and moving between activities harder than other kids seem to.
None of this is bad behavior. It's a nervous system that processes the world differently, and occupational therapy is built for exactly that.
You might notice your child:
- Covers their ears, avoids certain fabrics, or refuses many foods because of texture
- Seeks out spinning, crashing, jumping, or tight squeezes
- Has a very hard time when a routine changes or an activity ends
- Struggles with dressing, brushing teeth, using utensils, or toileting
- Plays alongside other children rather than with them, or prefers to play alone
- Has trouble with handwriting, scissors, or other fine motor tasks
- Melts down after school, in stores, or at family gatherings
- Seems clumsy, tires quickly, or avoids playground equipment
What Occupational Therapy for Autism Addresses
We look at the whole child: how they take in sensory information, what daily tasks are hard, and what your family needs to make home life calmer.
Sensory Regulation
We figure out what your child's sensory system needs, then build a daily plan of activities and supports that keep them calm and ready to engage.
Daily Living Skills
Dressing, feeding, grooming, toileting, and sleep routines, broken into steps your child can learn and you can practice at home.
Play & Social Connection
We meet your child in the play they already love, then gently widen it: sharing space, taking turns, and enjoying another person's company.
Motor Skills
Body awareness, balance, coordination, hand strength, and the fine motor control needed for school work and self-care.
Transitions & Routines
Visual schedules, warnings before changes, and calming tools that make the end of one activity and the start of the next far less painful.
Parent Coaching
You are with your child far more than we are. Every session ends with strategies you can use right away at home, at school, and out in Hobbs.
Our Approach
We follow your child's lead. Sessions are built around play-based, sensory-focused activities your child actually chooses, because a regulated, engaged child learns faster than one who is being made to comply.
We respect stimming, special interests, and the need for breaks. Our goal is participation and independence, defined by what matters to your child and your family, not by making your child look like anyone else.
And we coach you in every session. You'll leave knowing what we worked on, why, and how to keep it going between visits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my child need an autism diagnosis to start OT?
No. If you have concerns about sensory processing, daily skills, or play, we can evaluate and start working with your child while you pursue a diagnostic evaluation elsewhere. Some insurance plans require a referral, and we'll help with that.
Do I need a referral from our pediatrician?
Many insurance plans, including Medicaid, require a physician referral and authorization. We'll guide you through the process. Just give us a call.
How is OT different from ABA or speech therapy?
They work well together. Speech therapy focuses on communication, ABA on behavior, and occupational therapy on the sensory, motor, and daily living skills your child needs to participate in life. Many families use more than one.
How long will my child need OT?
Treatment plans are typically 6-12 months with weekly sessions, though this varies by child. We set specific, measurable goals and review progress regularly so you always know where things stand.
Will you try to stop my child from stimming?
No. Stimming is a way of regulating. We only step in when a movement is unsafe, and even then we look for a safer way to meet the same need rather than taking it away.
